Piano Refurbishing/Rebuilding
As a piano ages and hopefully is used, parts will begin to wear out. Once it is no longer possible to adjust these parts back to spec with regular servicing, it is time to replace parts. Generally speaking, after about 15-20 years the piano would be in need of refurbishing. After 40-50 years the piano most likely will need complete rebuilding.
Refurbishing
Refurbishing a piano would entail servicing some parts and replacing others. A common refurbish would include:
- Action regulation, possibly with new hammers if they are terrible worn.
- Cleaning or refinishing of the soundboard
- Rebronzing the harp/plate.
- New strings installed in the piano.
- Touch-up work done on the case parts.
Rebuilding
Rebuilding the piano is done when all parts are need of replacement. A sample rebuilding would include:
- A complete action rebuild with new parts.
- Installation of a new soundboard.
- Installation of a new pinblock.
- Rebronzing the harp/plate.
- New strings installed in the piano.
- A complete refinishing of the piano cabinet.
- polishing or replating all hardware.
