Welcome to the Keep it in Tune miniseries, The Baldwin Project, episode 6.  Today we will be replacing the pinblock.  We will cut it to the rough shape of the old block and then sand it to create a tight fit with the plate.  Well drill the necessary holes and fit it in the piano so that the plate will sit in exactly the same position as it did with the old pinblock.

Today we will finish the soundboard installation by setting the plate height with hard wood dowels and drilling the various holes for the plate bolts and screws. Once that is done, well be ready to get started on the pinblock.

In episode 4, we see the soundboard get glued back into the piano.  First we have to finish prepping the board for installation.  This includes putting a finish on the underside as it would be much more difficult afterwards.

I also start playing with some fun video effects in this episode.

In this episode we finish preparing the piano for the new soundboard. Once we recieve the new soundboard, we’ll do some final fitting. We will locate where the bridges need to go and get them glued on.

In episode 2, we finish making some templates and carefully remove the soundboard. Once the soundboard is removed, it is shipped to a soundboard maker to be duplicated. New bridge caps will also be installed and will then have to be planed, drilled and carved.

In this episode, I also learn to use the fast and slow motion video editing. I also try adding some music scoring in the background.

A Keep it in Tune miniseries on rebuilding a Baldwin grand piano. This series will cover everything from taking measurements to replacing the soundboard. In this episode we start taking measurements and take some notes as we get ready to pull the plate out.

Hopefully, my video editing is getting better, even with a few audio problems.

Allright! It’s here, the premier episode of Keep It In Tune. In this episode I explain the 3 main parts of the piano that affect the tuning and tuning stability of the piano once it is in your home. The steel strings, the tuning pins and pinblock as well as the soundboard. I also discuss the importance of keeping the piano tuned to concert pitch (A440). I eventually get to the answer to the question “How often should I have my piano tuned?” and will tell you what most piano manufactures recommend.
